Green Building Council of Australia
The GBCA is a national, not-for-profit organization that is uniquely supported by both industry and governments across the country.
The GBCA’s mission is to develop a sustainable property industry for Australia and drive the adoption of green building practices through market-based solutions by promoting green building programs, technologies, design practices and operations and integrating green building initiatives into the mainstream design, construction and operation of buildings.
In order to achieve these objectives, the GBCA launched the Green Star environmental rating tool for buildings in 2003. Green Star rating tools help the property industry to reduce the environmental impact of buildings, improve occupant health and productivity and achieve real cost savings, while showcasing innovation in sustainable building practices.
The Green Star rating process evaluates buildings against eight environmental impact categories, plus innovation. Within each category, points are awarded for initiatives that demonstrate that a project has met the overall objectives of Green Star and the specific criteria of the relevant rating tool credits. Points are then weighted and an overall score is calculated, determining the project's Green Star rating.
Green Star rating tools use 'stars' to rate performance:
- 4 Star Green Star Certified Rating (score 45-59) signifies 'Best Practice'
- 5 Star Green Star Certified Rating (score 60-74) signifies 'Australian Excellence'
- 6 Star Green Star Certified Rating (score 75-100) signifies 'World Leadership'
